All final answer sheets and assessments of the foundation courses at Delhi University will now be evaluated by the respective colleges only.
The new move will mean that the final exam answer scripts, which were earlier evaluated at designated checking centres, will now be passed onto the respective colleges for evaluation.
The varsity has decided to decentralise the evaluation of its final exam answer scripts of the foundation courses under its Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP).
Senior DU officials, who attended a series of meetings on the issue, maintained that the proposal had been passed after a section of teachers had requested for greater evaluation autonomy under FYUP.
“Nearly 90% of the teachers were happy with the way things were progressing under FYUP. But there had been requests to grant them more authority in evaluation,” said a DU official.
A proposal, which was passed in the Academic and Executive council meetings held on August 14, had, however, raised several doubts among the teachers.
While earlier only a student’s internal assessment (IA) was in the hands of the college, the remaining component of external assessment (EA) of the foundation courses will from now on also be marked by their college teachers.
“This will mean that a student’s fate will completely be decided by their colleges. This could also mean that marks of students may be overly inflated. Also, the new process is likely to increase the arbitrary component in evaluation as colleges will attempt to post stellar results,” said Naveen Gaur, professor of Physics at Dyal Singh College.
Some colleges, however, stated that guidelines to judge the parameters of assessment would be laid out to avoid cases of inflation or deflation of marks.
“If such a decision has been taken, it is well thought out. If you can trust college teachers with 55 marks worth assessment, then why not trust them with 20 more marks? There will be definite guidelines, to prevent any misuse of this factor,” said PC Jain, principal of Shri Ram College of Commerce.
