A swanky red air-conditioned bus with a woman driver behind the wheel and a woman conductor, serving girl students of various Delhi University colleges — Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) is contemplating a first-of-its-kind all-woman bus service in the Capital.

The proposal has been floated with an idea to make DTC a safer and reliable mode of public transport.

To help DTC in this unique effort would be the Delhi chapter of Confederation of Indian Industries (CII).

The challenge, however, would be to find women with valid driving licence to run heavy commercial vehicles or women who are actually interested in driving buses.

With new low-floor DTC buses equipped with features like power steering and automatic transmission, DTC managing director Naresh Kumar said women drivers would not find it difficult to drive the new buses.

While Kumar agreed to hire women drivers or train women in driving and help them get driving licence, the CII would train these drivers and conductors in etiquette, customer relation and groom their personality.

On Tuesday the DTC signed a memorandum of understanding with the CII to train its drivers and conductors in conversational English and etiquette to make them presentable and quipped to deal with international athletes and officials during the Commonwealth Games next year.

The DTC staff would initially get two-day training and would later undergo refresher course twice before the Games. The DTC has initially identified 250 drivers and 250 conductors for the training.
