The increasing number of vehicles and the subsequent lack of parking space has made the civic bodies come up with out-of-the-box solutions. The Public Works Department (PWD) has decided to use the space underneath flyovers as parking lots, a move that it believes will help check on-road parking too.
Two such parking lots have been made functional underneath the Munirka and Naraina flyover and they are running successfully.
"We are also trying to use the space underneath the Azadpur flyover too. We will identify other flyovers where the space can be used for parking vehicles," said a senior PWD official. The parking lot will be maintained by one of the three civic agencies under whose jurisdiction the flyovers will lie.
"Quite many flyovers run over busy market places and finding a parking space in such areas is a task. This move will help provide parking lots to shoppers. We will hand over the parking lot to the three corporations who will run and maintain it" added the official.
Officials said that this move will also ensure that the open spaces below flyovers are maintained well.
"Only flyovers with enough space below them will be targeted. A survey will be conducted to identify such flyovers," said a senior PWD official.
The civic agency is hoping that this initiative will help control on-road parking along these commercial areas.
There are approximately 72 lakh vehicles in the city and on an average, 1,300 vehicles are added to the city's roads every day, increasing the demand for parking lots.
