The screens will be ready ahead of the Commonwealth Games in 2010.
The LED screens will not only help keep citizens updated on happenings in the city but will also be useful to track stolen or robbed vehicles by displaying information related to it.
A certain section of the screen will be reserved for displaying public interest messages that will be screened free of cost.
“In case there is a carjacking the police will be able to display the registration number in real time to locate it. A certain area of the screen will be demarcated for such messages which will be displayed free of cost,” said a senior MCD official
These audio-video screens will be installed in various markets of the city and the project is being done on a Built Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis. The civic agency will earn revenue of Rs. 25.50 lakh per month through this project.
“In India we don’t have a concept of community viewing. These screens will be able to telecast live sports events such as cricket matches and Commonwealth Games-related events among others. The screens have been strategically located and will also display social messages, spreading awareness about health-related issues as well,” said a senior MCD official.
“LED displays are much brighter than standard signs and are visible from a much longer distance, even in direct sunlight,” said Jatin Bansal, managing director of International Techno Media Private Limited, the company, which is implementing the project.
Being a giant display screen — 10 feet in height and 20 feet in width — it is equipped to run round-the-clock, he said.
“Unlike plasma screens, it offers clear visibility in both night and day, and with the scan plus technology, one gets a better resolution and clear visibility even in daytime. It can also automatically adjust its brightness and contrast with ambient variations. The cost of this project is Rs. 50-60 crore,” he added.
The screen will also give information about the traffic density for various areas, and will guide people to lesser congested routes, hence helping in reducing traffic jams by giving prior information.
