Commissioners for the three newly formed municipal corporations of Delhi were announced on Sunday, and while two names had been doing the rounds, the third came as a huge surprise.
Former additional commissioner (engineering), Manish Gupta, was made the commissioner of South Delhi, PK Gupta, special commissioner, transport department was given charge of North Delhi and SS Yadav, a relatively lesser known young bureaucrat was made the commissioner of East Delhi.
The names of the commissioners were cleared by the Lt Governor’s office on Friday.
Manish Gupta has been working with the MCD for over six months. Earlier he had served with the Delhi government. Before that he was director in the Ministry of Textiles, Delhi.
PK Gupta is currently special commissioner, transport and has held special charge of chairman-cum-managing director of DTC in the past. He has served on important posts in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
Following the trifurcation of MCD, three new corporations — South Delhi Municipal Corporation, North Delhi Municipal Corporation and East Delhi Municipal Corporation have come into existence. The officials will serve as heads of the organisations.
There was always speculation that Manish Gupta and PK Gupta would be made commissioners. Another name doing the rounds was MCD’s additional commissioner Janak Diggal.
The selection of SS Yadav, however, happened at the last minute. Yadav is from 1995 batch (UT cadre) and has served as director of Health and Family Affairs.
