Proceedings of the Standing Committee of the MCD were disrupted on Thursday when Congress councillors started shouting slogans against the BJP and yoga guru Baba Ramdev.

Accusing Ramdev of siding with RSS and BJP, the opposition Congress said that MCD should not have given the Ramlila Maidan to Ramdev in the first place. "He booked the ground for a yoga camp but every body knew that his main purpose was to observe a fast. MCD also knew about it and yet allowed him to set up tents there," said Jai Kishan Sharma, leader of Opposition in MCD.

The Congress councillors also criticised the fast by Anna Hazare saying that holding the fast at Rajghat was disrespectful to Mahatma Gandhi. "That place is known for its peaceful environment but the Hazare camp and the BJP were using loudspeakers, playing songs and were dancing," Sharma added.

Meanwhile, an indignant Mayor has written to Delhi police commissioner BK Gupta seeking an explanation as to why MCD was not informed before cancelling the booking of Ramdev. In a letter written on Monday she said that the yoga camp at Ramlila Ground was granted permission by the MCD as it is its property. "I would like to know as to under what circumstances the permission granted by MCD was cancelled by Delhi Police and why the MCD was not informed regarding the cancellation of permission," reads the letter.
