The Congress has become the first major political party in Bihar to announce its first list of 77 candidates for the assembly elections in the state, beginning October 21.

Bihar Congress president Mehboob Ali Kaiser, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Ashok Kumar Ram and former Janata Dal (United) MP Nagamani are among the prominent candidates.

By announcing the list late Monday night, the Congress, which has decided to go alone in the polls besides contesting on from all the 243 constituencies, took a lead over its rival JD(U)-BJP and RJD-LJP alliances in this crucial exercise.

Desperate to win back Muslim support, the party has given tickets to 22 members of the minority community who constitute 15-16 per cent of the total population in the state.

The party has also given fair representation to youth and women with 14 women in the first list.

The list has evoked mixed reaction. While some say the Congress has done a balancing act, party leader Sadhu Yadav announced his resignation from the election campaign committee, alleging that candidates with mass support were ignored.
