Many TV debates but few suitable faces — this is the new concern for the Congress, aiming to aggressively mark its presence in the electronic media ahead of the next general election.
The party is laying down an ambitious plan to tackle both the electronic and social media platforms more effectively. The Congress will soon enroll more TV panelists — taking the number up to 50 from the current 36 — since internal assessments show that more young leaders capable of handling key issues from different regions are required.
“Apart from the English news channels there several Hindi channels and key channels in regional languages. Not a single slot for Congress representatives should go empty due to lack of good orators,” said a senior party functionary.
On the social media front, the party is revamping its online platforms and encouraging more workers to use e-media tools more effectively. “The earlier page of All India Congress Committee (AICC) will be soon taken away and this will be the main interface of the party on facebook,” said a source.
The key feature of the new facebook page is a definitive timeline with milestone events of the Congress party. “This type of an archive doesn’t exist anywhere else. We did a lot of research and collected many unpublished materials including photos for the new page,” said a key associate of the project.
As the Congress has finally woken up to the need of gaining foothold on online platforms, the party will hold an exclusive workshop for the social media on August 22 and 23. The meeting is expected to be addressed by party vice president Rahul Gandhi, and each state unit has been asked to send five representatives.
