Concerned over the recent spate of violence and murder in the name of “honour” in different regions of the country, the Congress on Tuesday called for a suitable new law to deal with such crimes.

“If the existing criminal law of the land is not sufficient, then the government should also consider the passage of any suitable legislation to tackle the problem,” party spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan said.

Earlier in the day, Law Minister Veerappa Moily said the Home Ministry has already prepared a bill aimed at “putting an end” to such “extra-judicial” actions. “The bill has been vetted.” The government is now planning to introduce the bill in the monsoon session of Parliament.
