On Sunday, stay away from Connaught Place. You won’t be able to get anywhere near it on account of the security arrangement for the Commonwealth Games cycling event.
“All authorised parking lots in Connaught Place will be closed. People heading to CP in their personal vehicles can park at Bhagat Singh Marg and Baba Kharak Singh Marg or New Delhi Railway Station parking lot,” said a senior Traffic police officer.
DTC buses will not be allowed to ply in CP, India Gate, the radial roads and nearby areas before 7 pm on Sunday. The Metro’s Patel Chowk and Central Secretariat stations will remain closed between 6 am and 6 pm.
For those coming to see the cycling event, park and ride facility is being organised.
“We have made parking arrangements for the spectators between C Hexagon and Man Singh Road. Parking will be allotted to them on a first-come-first-serve basis. From there they can walk to Janpath or Rajpath to watch the event or avail the park-and-ride facility till CP A and B block,” said Satyender Garg, Joint CP (Traffic). The spectators will have to produce a valid ticket for the event to be allowed to park their vehicles there.
Delhi has never seen such traffic restrictions on the scale that has been planned for Sunday. Even emergency vehicles will not be allowed to ply on Connaught Place, Sansad Marg, Ashoka Road, Rajpath, Janpath, Dr Rajender Prasad Road, Red Cross Road, Minto Road and DDU Marg between midnight and 7 pm.
“We have never put restrictions on emergency vehicles before. But Sunday will be a tough job, as traffic, including emergency vehicles, will be restricted,” said Ajay Chadha, Special CP (Traffic). The men’s competition (165 km) will start at 9 am and the women’s event (100 km) will start at 1 pm and continue till 6 pm.
