In a shocking case of protectors transforming into predators, a Delhi Police constable posted with Tilak Marg Police Station in New Delhi district, allegedly tried to molest and then extort money from two schoolgirls inside the National Zoological Park (Delhi Zoo).
The constable, identified as Amarjeet, was arrested on Tuesday evening after the victims made a complaint against him. An FIR for outraging modesty, extortion and wrongful restraint has been registered against him. Police said that the matter was reported around 11 am after the victims approached Tilak Marg Police Station with a written complaint against the constable.
According to police the victims, who are students in a government school, had come to visit the zoo in the morning and were wearing school uniforms. "One of the girls in her statement said the two had planned to visit the zoo. Around 8.30 am they left for the place in an auto rickshaw. But since they were wearing school uniforms the guards at the zoo stopped them from going inside after which one of the girls called up her cousin. The cousin reached there and the girls then entered the zoo with him," said a senior police officer on the condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
The constable allegedly misbehaved with the girls when they were about to leave the zoo.
The police said that they were near a canteen inside the zoo when Amardeep stopped them and asked the cousin to follow him to the nearby toilet.
"Amardeep then threatened the cousin and said he would implicate him in a false case and asked to give R 5,000. The boy got frightened and he handed over his wallet that was containing R 600 in cash. The accused took the money and asked him to send the girls inside the toilet," added the officer.
The police said that when the girls went there the accused asked for more money and started molesting them.
When the girls objected his act and protested he threatened them and tried to assault them as well. They were let off only after the girls said that they would raise an alarm.
