A 52-year-old Delhi Police constable was beaten to death for stopping a railways' catering manager from taking a shortcut by crossing the tracks at the New Delhi Railway Station instead of using the elevated ramp on Monday.
Additional DCP (railways) Bhairon Singh Gurjar said Riyaz was assaulted when he asked manager Dhanpat to use the ramp to reach his train on the platform across instead of walking over the tracks.
"We found Riyaz lying lifeless on the ground. He was taken to Lady Hardinge Hospital where he was declared dead," he said.
The police said Dhanpat and four subordinates were carrying food and beverages to the Ludhiana Shatabdi Express when Riyaz tried to stop them. "Dhanpat flared up and started hitting Riyaz. He hit him hard below the abdomen. Riyaz fell on the track and sustained a head injury," said an officer investigating the case.
Dhanpat was arrested, charged with murder and produced in the Tis Hazari courts. He has been sent to a week's judicial custody.
"A three-member enquiry committee has been set up. We expect to complete the probe by Tuesday evening. Dhanpat was an employee of the Northern Railways headquarters," said Ashwani Lohani, divisional railway manager, Northern Railways.
