A 45-year-old Delhi traffic police constable was mowed down by a speeding cluster bus that jumped the traffic signal in south Delhi's Lajpat Nagar area on Monday morning.
According to police, the accident took place around 7 am below the Lajpat Nagar flyover where the victim was monitoring the movement of traffic.
Police said the constable was dragged for about 20 yards before the bus driver stopped the vehicle as he had failed to spot him. The constable, Ratan Pal, is a resident of Khanpur in south Delhi.
A case of rash and negligent driving causing death was registered against the errant driver, Somveer, 24. He was arrested from the accident spot. Police have confiscated the bus.
A senior police officer said that Pal was standing at the traffic signal below the flyover when he saw the bus jumping the signal. Eyewitnesses told police that after seeing the bus driver violating the traffic rule, Pal came on the road and attempted to stop the bus.
"The bus driver, however, lost control of the bus and crushed Pal under the wheels of the bus and dragged him for a few yards. Pal suffered critical injuries and was immediately rushed to Moolchand Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead," said the senior officer, adding that he died due to massive head injuries.
The family members of Pal were informed almost an hour after his death.
