A 40-year-old labourer was crushed to death inside a cement mixer that was accidently switched on by another labourer while the victim was cleaning it. The incident took place at a construction site in north Delhi’s Subhash Maidan on Saturday evening.

The victim, Vishwanath, a native of Raipur in Chhattisgarh, had gone inside the machine to clean it at 4:30 pm. His brother-in-law, Avdhesh, 23, also a labourer, switched on the machine without realising that Vishwanath was inside. Avdhesh then went to drink water.

“When he returned, he went close to check what was wrong with the machine and found Vishwanath’s dismembered body inside the machine. Police were immediately informed and a case of causing death due negligence has been registered against Avdhesh. He will be arrested,” a senior police officer said.

According to police, an underground parking lot is being constructed at Subhash Maidan and both Vishwanath and Avdhesh had been working there for the past one-and-a-half year.

They were living at the construction site.

“After switching on the machine, Andhesh left to drink water, just 10 metres from the spot. The victim must have shouted for help but since no one was present near the site, he couldn’t be saved,” the officer further said.

Vishwanath, married 10 years ago, has two sons.

Further investigations are on and the body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
