A young constable was accidentally shot dead by a colleague on Monday in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, police have said.
Dinesh Kumar, the 22-year-old son of a Bikaner farmer, was shot by a fellow constable, who the police identified only as Sunil. The incident, which occurred around 11.30am, was reported from the Malviya Nagar Police Training College. The gun had been issued to Kalu, another constable.
“Sunil has been arrested for murder and suspended from duty,” Chhaya Sharma, the DCP (south), said.
Dinesh, Sunil and Kalu, all of them recruited in 2010 and inmates of the same barracks, were chatting before the shooting. “During the conversation, Sunil picked up the rifle and, in jest, pointed it at Dinesh’s chest and pulled the trigger even before Kalu, who was getting ready after a bath, could tell him that the weapon was loaded,” a senior police said.
The police said they had questioned Sunil and were certain that he had no malicious intent.
Dinesh, who had a bachelor’s degree in education, returned from a vacation on April 26.
