A 29-year-old policeman was injured when his colleague reportedly opened fired at him outside the Prime Minister’s Office in South Block on Friday afternoon. The incident took place inside the changing room at the gate. The two were reportedly examining their service revolvers and were dressed for duty.

Police said preliminary investigations have revealed that it was an accident, but they were also examining other angles. The incident sent the security officials into a tizzy and senior police officers rushed to the spot soon after the incident.

The victim, Head Constable Sanjay Kumar Singh, is posted with the 2nd Battalion of the Delhi Armed Police. He was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where he underwent an operation. His colleague Suraj Pal, who had fired the shot, has been detained. He was posted with the Parliament Street police station.

“They were examining their service revolvers when Suraj Pal accidentally opened fire. We have detained him and registered a case of negligence and manhandling of firearms against him,” said Ajay Kashyap, joint commissioner of police (New Delhi Range).

The incident was reported around 12.05 pm on Wednesday when they were examining their .38 bore service revolvers. Police said they were investigating whether it was a case of accidental firing or they had entered into some brawl before Suraj opened fire on Sanjay.

“Sanjay told us that it was a case of accidental firing. A bullet pierced through his left thigh. He was doing fine and had to be operated upon. He also asked us not to inform his family as they would panic,” said Dr SK Sharma, chief medical officer at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.
