A 42-year-old man was beaten up by an iron rod in an incident of road rage at Greater Kailash-I in south Delhi on Tuesday afternoon, police said. The victim suffered 25 stitches on his head.

His family alleged there was jurisdiction tussle between the police and he lay bleeding on the road for about 45 minutes till he was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre. The police denied the claims.

The victim, Saji Ahmed, a male nurse, was on his way from his workplace in Khanpur to his home in Shakarpur when he accidentally hit a motorcyclist at a traffic intersection in Greater Kailash-I near the BRT corridor around 12 noon.

“There was a huge traffic jam and my brother accidentally hit another motorcyclist. The man abused him and then attacked him with an iron rod,” said Jiji George, Ahmed’s sister.

She said after a call was made to the police control room (PCR), policemen from Hauz Khas and Greater Kailash fought over the jurisdiction.

“At least they should have rushed him to the hospital first. They were busy deciding on the area. The situation was worse at the hospital. He was lying there without any medical help and was bleeding profusely,” said George. Police said they arrested the accused, identified as Qayyuum (23).

A case of wrongful restraint and hurt was registered at the GK-I police station.

“There was no jurisdictional tussle and the victim was rushed to hospital well in time. We have registered a case and arrested the accused person. There was a minor argument between the two bikers which flared up,” said a police officer.

The accused is an iron welder and was carrying a small rod with him.

“We are shifting him to a private hospital as there are no beds at AIIMS Trauma centre,” said George.
