Following intelligence reports that the national capital could be a target of terror attacks, the Delhi police have decided to deploy undercover policemen to keep an eye on things during the Games.
Police said least 700 plainclothes policemen would be on duty during the Commonwealth Games besides the men in khakis.
The police added that the Delhi police would send a section of police officers in white clothes to mix with the audience and gather intelligent inputs about any possible terror strike.
They would also be keeping an eye on possible miscreant, who might disrupt any event.
A section of the policemen will liaison with the participants, while some will be deployed at sensitive areas comprising the VIP enclosures, players' entry points and dressing rooms.
J.K. Sharma, Joint Commissioner of Police, Commonwealth Games, said, “We have planned to introduce policemen in white clothes along with the men in khaki. The force in khaki will be deployed at strategic locations while the men in white will mix with spectators and profile the ones who appear to be suspicious.”
A police officer said generally the presence or the very sight of policemen in khaki alert the miscreant and criminals.
In stadia, which are critically high sensitive zone, any kind of law violation might cause major damage, said police.
Those who would be placed in strategic locations and also liaisoning with the foreign athletes are the ones who are fluent in English, informed a senior police officer.
For this the Delhi police's Provisioning & Logistics Department invited tenders to purchase 667 white shirts and trousers.
These shirts and trousers will be allotted to select constables and sub-inspectors, the officer said.
