Wednesday’s brutal gangrape of a 30-year-old BPO employee is not the only case of its kind. A similar case was reported two years ago when unidentified men made an unsuccessful attempt to abduct a BPO employee from near her house in west Delhi’s Uttam Nagar area.
The BPO employee managed to escape due to her presence of mind. The police are now trying to connect the dots.
Police said they have come across similar cases in Gurgaon and adjoining areas in the city, which were not reported, that might give them a clue to the present case.
The incident dates back to May 2008, when a BPO employee who had to report for work at 5 am was waiting for her cab — an Indica. The woman had been following the same routine for the past fortnight.
“The woman got a call from her office in Gurgaon, saying that the cab would reach her in five minutes. For some reason it was delayed. When she got down, she noticed a Tata Indica, which did not have the mandatory logo of the BPO firm. Two men were sitting inside. She smelt a rat and ran upstairs. The car sped off. A minute later she got a call from her office saying that her cab would be delayed,” said a senior police officer.
Although no case was registered, the BPO firm lodged an informal complaint with the police and asked them to investigate. “It is too early to say whether the two cases are connected, but we are still investigating,” said the officer.
HGS Dhaliwal, DCP (south) said, “During the course of investigations we are coming across instances where women working the graveyard shifts in and around Delhi have been targeted in a similar manner. We are trying to get the details of all these cases.”
Meanwhile, police have released the sketch of a second suspect on Saturday. It was prepared with the help of the details provided by the victim and her colleague, who was also targeted by the five accused but she managed to escape. So far, the police have got four eyewitnesses in the case. Police said they have sought details of all criminals active in and around the scene of crime.
