A day after her alleged boyfriend attacked her mother and younger sister, the Delhi Police questioned Shivangi Mangal on Saturday in connection with the case.
The boyfriend, identified as 25-year-old Ankur Sabharwal was desperate to marry Shivangi, a school teacher. He planned to kill the mother, Monica, because she was against their relationship.
Shivangi told the police that her parents had been trying to find her a groom for the past four months. Sabharwal was infuriated by this turn of events, she said.
"Sabharwal thought that her girlfriend’s mother was an impediment to their relationship. Eliminating her would give him some time to sort out the matter. He wanted some time to separate from his wife," said a senior police officer.
On Friday morning, Sabharwal had attacked 50-year-old Monica and 20-year-old Megha with an iron rod. Both have been admitted to the Moolchand Hospital with critical head injuries. Shivangi, her father and her younger brother were not home when the incident was reported around 7.30 am.
Sabharwal was overpowered by the Mangal family's landlord Bharat Bhushan Bhutani while he tried to flee the scene. Bhutani, who owns the first floor flat in Lajpat Nagar where the incident happened, has been made a key eyewitness in this case of attempted murder. Bhutani is to identify the accused during a parade.
The police said that Sabharwal and Shivangi have known each other for six years. Shivangi's family, before moving to the rented house in Lajpat Nagar, used to live in Gurgaon where Sabharwal used to visit the family.
On Saturday, Sabharwal was produced at a city court, which remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days.
