If the claims of the Delhi Police are to be believed, then they have not received the autopsy report of 11-year-old Shanno Khan till now.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Atul Katiyar claimed police are yet to receive the report. Senior doctors at Maulana Azad Medical College however, said they conducted the postmortem examination and submitted the report to police on Sunday evening.
According to doctors, the post mortem examination suggested the girl, who has a medical history, developed complications after she was allegedly made to “sit like a hen” with two bricks on her shoulders in the sun. Shanno was an epileptic and had a history of lung and respiratory problems.
“The initial medical report also suggests that the girl developed further complications because her mother had taken her to a maulvi first to ‘ward off evil spirits’. A delay in treatment also could have led to her death,” said a senior police officer.
But doctors said the cause of her death was an epileptic attack, triggered by standing in the sun. This was due to the alleged corporal punishment by Shanno’s teacher Manju (26) who is yet to be arrested.
The police have till now recorded the statements of the parents of the deceased and the accused teacher.
“A Delhi Police team visited the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Girls Primary School in Bawana and collected the names and records of Shanno’s classmates. Their statements are being recorded,” said DCP Katiyar. “The girl had failed her exams and her teacher was already angry with her. On April 15, Shanno was not able to translate an English word, which angered her teacher. Some students said the teacher told Shanno to get out and then made her sit like a hen. After some time, the teacher went outside and put two bricks on her shoulders,” said a senior officer.
The school has been closed since the day of the incident. An MCD vigilance team, formed to investigate the incident, said they are trying to contact Shanno’s schoolmates to ascertain the factual position of the incident. They were supposed to present a report by Monday.
