Denying reports about felicitating those who converted to Hinduism in Uttar Pradesh on the martyrdom day of Swami Shraddhanand, the Arya Kendriya Sabha said the unnecessary furore had cost them a lot — literally.

According to members of the Sabha, they will have to make security arrangements on their own for the rally on December 25, Christmas, at Ramlila Grounds. “Delhi Police has asked us to make sure that attendance does not exceed 7,000. We have been asked to install 32 CCTV cameras, bag scanners and a fully functional walkie-talkie system to manage the procession. We have had to spend an additional Rs 2.5 lakh because of the misunderstanding,” said Joginder Khattar, media coordinator, Arya Kendriya Sabha.

“This event has been happening in the city on the same day for 87 years without any problems. We condemn the politicisation of the issue. AAP should not try to gain political mileage out of this rumour. We have no alliance with any party and we have no plans to honour anyone. We have invited Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay as he is a prominent personality. He is the only political leader we have invited,” said Khattar.

According to Sabha members, close to 8,000 people attended the event last year. “We are expecting a bigger number this year as more people got interested after the controversy. The police have asked us to cut down the number of people but we are not sure how to do it. This rumour has turned out to be a big problem for us,” said Sabha’s general secretary Rajiv Arya.
