The Delhi Police on Tuesday registered a case under various sections of the IPC in Tuesday's pedestrian bridge collapse near Jawaharlal Nehru stadium. A Chandigarh based firm — P&R Infraprojects Limited, which was contracted by the Delhi government's Public Works Department, was constructing the bridge.
The crime branch of the Delhi Police is also investigating the case. The police said, for now, the case has been registered against unknown persons and that they will make arrests as and when the accountability is fixed.
The case was lodged on the basis of the PCR call.
Around 100 labourers were working at the bridge when it collapsed.
“We have registered a case under sections 336, 337 and 338 of the IPC. Investigations are underway to find out the person responsible for this. As far as we know, no senior official was monitoring the project," said a senior police officer.
The incident was reported around 3.01 p.m. near Gate number 4 of the stadium. The bridge was being built at the mouth of the Barapullah elevated road that will connect the stadium to the Games Village near Akshardham temple. The police said most of the labourers were
not wearing safety helmets.
The police said they would be questioning the supervisory officials of the Chandigarh based company.
"We have recorded the statement of the injured labourers and would question the managerial staff of the Chandigarh based firm," said the officer.
