Calling the elderly people an ‘untapped resource’, an advocacy NGO has appealed to the Election Commission to record the actual number of senior citizens who vote in elections.

Just as the EC records the total number of male and female voters, it should also issue a direction to record the number of votes cast by people above 60 years, NGO Agewell Foundation has said. In a representation to the EC, Agewell Foundation said the data would be the most authentic proof of older persons’ importance and involvement in the democratic process.

“It would inspire political parties and national leadership to focus on the needs and rights of people, particularly in the fast-changing demographic and socio-economic scenario in the country,” the letter said.

Delhi has approximately 11 lakh senior citizens.
