YP Soli (61), who was found murdered at his Srestha Vihar house in east Delhi on Sunday, was allegedly killed by his domestic help, the day he was asked to get a police verification done, the police said.

Despite a door-to-door drive announced for elderly citizens by the police commissioner a fortnight ago, the couple had not been enrolled in the senior citizen cell yet. Though the police claimed they visited more than 31,000 senior citizens in the city, only 8,397 have been registered with the cell.

The police said Sujit Kumar (21) had reportedly gained entry in the Soli household four days ago with the motive of robbery. The house was ransacked and cash and jewellery worth lakhs were robbed.

While Soli was killed, his wife Sudha (55) was critically injured.

Police chief Y.S. Dadwal had announced an inspector-level officer would visit the house of senior citizens living alone and keep a watch on them. Getting the servants verified with the police was one of its aspects.

Soli, neighbours said, suffered from a cardiac ailment and had a pacemaker installed. Besides running a chartered accountancy firm from home he was also a council member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI).

“Sudha was bleeding from her head. She could barely speak. Despite a head injury she managed to come down and open the door which had an automatic lock and could not be opened from outside. Her face was badly bruised,” said Arun Gupta, a neighbour.

She is in a critical condition at Max Hospital and has not been able to record her statement with the police.

Soli’s body has been sent for postmortem. There were no apparent injury marks on his body, police said.

Police said at least two persons could be involved in the crime.

The Fiat Palio car in which the accused was believed to have fled was found abandoned near Azadpur Sabzi Mandi in northwest Delhi on Sunday evening.
