A well-off couple has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping Gungun, the two-year-old girl who had surfaced a couple of days after she went missing.

Gungun was found in Jhandewalan temple, after she went missing from India Gate while on an outing with her family.

Jugal Kishore and Rekha were picked up from their Prasad Nagar home in central Delhi.

“The couple had two children. But they lost their daughter to an illness one-and-a-half years back. They desperately wanted another daughter but doctors told them they couldn’t have another baby,” said a senior police officer on the condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media. This apparently led them to take Gungun home.

The couple found Gungun playing on the lawns at India Gate. When no one came forward to claim her, they took her home. But they let her go after news about her disappearance was flashed in the media.

Kishore runs a sari business from his residence. He left for Ahmedabad with his wife after leaving the girl in the temple, the police said.

“As the media had highlighted the case, it helped us find out the residence of the couple. We went there and sent a notice to the couple’s parents asking them to call the couple back from Ahmedabad,” said joint commissioner (New Delhi range) Dharmendra Kumar.

Kumar said a case for secretly taking anyone home has been registered against the couple.
