The heart of the city - Connaught Place - was given a touch-up on Saturday when sanitation workers of the New Delhi Municipal Council, members of a traders' association and private firm JCDecaux cleaned up the beetle-juice stained pillars and washed the corridors of the market.

"Since the time of the British rule, when it was built, CP has been a hotspot for shoppers and has some of the best eateries in town. On Saturday, JCDecaux deployed their 15 cleaning and maintenance vehicles and a team of 65 skilled workers to carry out a cleaning drive in the inner circle of CP. The activity is likely to garner tremendous response and such initiatives are welcomed to ensure a better tomorrow for the city," said Atul Bhargava, president of the Delhi Traders' Association.

Vehicles equipped with state-of-the-art cleaning tools were used to wash the pavements and walkways in front of the shops.

"Skilled workers whitewashed the giant pillars of this Georgian architecture. The main objective of this drive was to increase awareness among people towards keeping our public spaces clean and maintained," said an NDMC official.

Bits of papers and polythene bags lying around were collected and disposed off to make the market presentable for Diwali when shop owners string up lights to deck it up. The exercise started at around 9am and continued till the afternoon.

An NDMC official said machines were used to wash the market that has been collecting dirt and debris because of restoration work.
