CPI on Wednesday flayed the Indian government, accusing it of "helplessness" in dealing with the Sri Lankan government on the question of working out a political solution for the Tamils.

Party leader and Rajya Sabha member D Raja said on "perceived fear of geo-political problems and compulsions" the government was treating Sri Lanka with "velvet gloves" and not not doing enough to work out a political settlement of the ethnic issue.

Referring to various agreements reached between the two countries after visiting President Mahinda Rajapakse's meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he said none of them contained anything concrete for the Sri Lankan Tamils or for the safety of Indian fishermen, who are attacked by Sri Lankan forces.

"It is another betrayal by the Indian government," he said.
