With Diwali round the corner, the Delhi Police have seized 2,715 kg of firecrackers worth around Rs 27 lakh, stored illegally in two godowns. The police have arrested two people in this connection.

“We received an input about storage of firecrackers in a godown in Sarai Rohilla. A raid was conducted during which, 1,185 kg of firecrackers were seized. Prashant Khandelwal, 27, was arrested in this connection,” said Ashok Chand, DCP (crime).

Following Khandelwal's interrogation, another godown in Uttam Nagar was raided and 1,530 kg of firecrackers stored illegally, were seized.

“Kapil Tyagi, 32, was arrested in this connection,” Chand added. Khandelwal is a businessman and runs a hosiery shop in Sarai Rohilla, while Tyagi runs a stationery shop in Uttam Nagar, the police said.

The duo had procured the firecrackers from a wholesaler in Gurgaon and stored it in rented godowns. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.

“Fire crackers are highly combustible and can cause a major fire hazard. We are running a special drive to bust illegal sale of fire crackers,” Chand said.
