A construction worker was killed and another injured when a part of a crane fell on them at the Commonwealth Games Village site in east Delhi on Sunday.
Other workers alleged the contractor’s staff tried to hush up the matter by immediately taking away the body in an ambulance and dumping it outside the site. Delhi Police and Emaar MGF, the developer of the Village, denied the allegations.
Eyewitnesses said a crane that was shifting load malfunctioned and a part of it fell off around 9 am. Shailender (28), whose last name was not available, died on the spot.
Angry workers then vandalised the site office of the contractor and damaged the ambulance and three other vehicles.
A police officer said, “The victim was taken to the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital where he was declared brought dead. We have registered a case of negligence against the contractor.”
The spokesperson for Emaar MGF said the accident occurred due to machinery malfunction. “We will ensure that the compensation is disbursed immediately.”
A spokesperson for Ahluwalia Contractors India Limited, the contractors, said: “An internal inquiry has been constituted to investigate the cause of the accident.”
