Creativity is the new selling mantra

Creativity seems to be the mantra at the obviously popular stalls from Thailand and Vietnam at the foreign partners’ pavilion at the ongoing India International Trade Fair, reports Nivedita Khandekar.

Cute little ceramic Champa flower (frangipani) as incense stick holder, corner stands and decorative pieces like sleek vases and rotund pots made of mango wood, danglers made of sea shells … clearly creativity at its best.

That’s not all. Beautiful golden yellow Buddha motifs enshrined in base mud, cream-coloured sola wood used as it is and also coloured in different hues for dry flower arrangements, unique designer pots, bricks and even tiles of terracotta in combination with bamboo frills, the list is endless.

Creativity, specially using the most natural forest products, seems to be the mantra at the obviously popular stalls from Thailand and Vietnam at the foreign partners’ pavilion at the ongoing India International Trade Fair.

People are flocking in hordes to the various stalls put up by entrepreneurs and private companies from Vietnam and Thailand. Tran Ngoc Thu Ha has brought with her beautiful frames made of lacque polish and sea shells on wooden base. “Besides frames in various sizes, we have items like small and big jewellary boxes, wooden wall hangings with animal motifs. Going by the sales pitch, I can say, people are loving these products,” she said.

A little distance away, Vanit Mola and his wife are debating whether to buy the sleek tall vase, (“This has such a beautiful figure: he) or the round little one (“that will only be a show piece, this can be used as a flower pot too: she). But the apt salesgirl convinces them that the price is quite reasonable and they ended up buying both pieces.

Another popular draw is a fruit holder, a combination of bamboo base basket and nylon net. Burly housewives seemed happy to find at least one thing that suited their taste.

Then there are herbal cosmetics, fancy imitation jewellary, different plastic household items in innovative designs and not to mention perfumes, all of which are vying for attention.

Thailand (and for that matter even Vietnam) conjures up images of tourism activity. But the message from these stalls is loud and clear, there is more to Thailand than the famed Thai massage.
