In a shocking case of a cop turning criminal, a 60-year-old dry fruit shop owner was shot dead by a Delhi Police head constable in north Delhi’s Lahori Gate area on Saturday.

Head constable Ajay Kumar Tomar shot the businessman, Amarjeet Singh Chadha, after robbing him of his gold chain.

The crime took place around 8.30 pm. Tomar tried to flee on his motorbike but was chased by a patrol team with the help of a biker, Harinder Singh, who was near the crime scene.

Tomar, who panicked, fired at Singh thrice.

“One of the bullets hit Singh’s neck,” said IB Rani, DCP (North).

“Tomar then jumped from the Pul Mithai flyover to escape. He’s badly hurt and has been taken to the Bara Hindu Rao Hospital,” Rani said.

Singh, who runs a mobile phone repair shop in Daryaganj, is in a critical condition.

Tomar has been booked for murder, attempt to murder, and robbery. Chadha’s family slammed the police for the killing. “How can we trust the police when they themselves are involved in criminal activities?” said Balbir Singh, Chadha’s brother.
