A 22-year-old painter was arrested for his alleged involvement in a spate of burglaries at the homes of doctors and the abduction of a young girl in south Delhi, police said on Friday.
Sonu, a resident of Kotla Mubarakpur, was arrested by a team of policemen near Aurobindo College in Malviya Nagar on Thursday.
The police claimed that five cases of burglary at the homes of doctors of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have been solved with his arrest.
“With Sonu’s arrest, five instances of burglary at Ansari Nagar, where doctors working at AIIMS stay, have been solved and stolen jewellery and other items worth lakhs recovered,” said Chhaya Sharma, DCP (south).
Sonu, according to the police, arrived in Delhi in 2009 from Bijnore in Uttar Pradesh and began working as a painter-cum-electrician in Ansari Nagar.
His prolonged absence from the Ansari Nagar area where the burglaries were committed had put him firmly on the police’s radar.
The police said Sonu would only target the homes of doctors, and would enter them either by breaking locks or by using master keys.
“He would prepare duplicate keys while doing odd jobs at the homes that he would be employed at,” said DCP Sharma.
“During interrogation, he also confessed to have abducted the minor daughter of his landlord from Uttar Pradesh’s Baraielly promising her marriage,” she added.
