Hi guys. I know it is that time of the year when that big bang haircut or those lovely light pink horseshoe fit trousers would count for nothing. What matters is the “best four”. But before you go any further and base your life on this “best four”, spare some time to read my story.
I opted for Humanities in school. My Class XIIth score of 76% was considered very good at the time, especially for someone who was already playing Ranji Trophy for Delhi. The scores may have been good at that time, but I got admission in Hindu College not because I scored 76% but because I was playing cricket for Delhi. Here is another story of mine which will give you the complete picture.
I flunked in class 10th. And that can be extremely devastating for any student, leave alone someone who was handling the pressures of being a Modernite. The prospect of sharing classroom with my juniors was staring at me. Trust me, this stare was more ferocious than that of a fast bowler’s glare. But soon, cricket came to my rescue. It inflated my confidence. I was ready to take on the world. Yes, I was not as good as some of my classmates in studies. But then they, too, could not get anywhere close to the Delhi Ranji Trophy dressing room. I felt equal, if not better.
Nothing has changed in 2013. You’d say that in present times with those numbers, I would have no future. I disagree. To me, the best four are not what the mark sheet shows; my best four are — Courage, Conviction, Confidence and Consistency. If you have these, you can take on the world even if the scores are 33%!
I’m not a big fan of our education system, where so much hinges on one set of examinations. I mean cut-offs going as high as 100% is an insult. Let’s assume someone scored 100%. Will spending 3 years in college, earning a Bachelor’s degree ensure a decent future for him or her? So what are we trying to achieve?
Therefore, I’d humbly advise that you should go on and look for vocational courses. Enroll in distant learning. Or even look for universities outside of DU. I mean come on, there are enough takers for your big bang haircut or horseshoe cut pink trousers outside DU as well!
