Putting his life on the line for the safety of his family and house, a daredevil bureaucrat fought off two potential burglars at his Vasant Kunj house on Friday night.
The 59-year-old Vijay Kumar Gupta, an additional director general in the commerce ministry's foreign trade department, showed immense courage in the face of adversity, even though he was stabbed more than half a dozen times, when he confronted two burglars poised to break into his DDA flat in Vasant Kunj, B-block, on Friday night.
Gupta fought tooth and nail and suffered eight stitches while overpowering two goons who were about to break into his three-bedroom flat.
"He and his wife, Kusumlata, had just returned home and Vijay had gone to the bedroom on the first floor when he sensed a movement outside," said RD Sharma, Gupta's friend who also stays in the B-block.
When he opened the door, Sharma claimed, two men who had covered their faces with handkerchiefs jumped on him.
But Gupta, who is due to retire from service at the end of the coming month, managed to overpower one of them even as the other stabbed him several times near the groin with a kitchen knife.
"But Vijay didn't let go of one of the goons and even bit the finger of the one who was under his grip. The struggle lasted a good 10 minutes," Sharma said. Meanwhile, one of Gupta's neighbours witnessed the incident and called the police. But the assailants managed to escape though only empty-handed leaving the 59-year-old bureaucrat in a pool of his own blood.
He was rushed to a private hospital and discharged only on Saturday morning.
A case of attempted robbery has been registered and investigations are underway, police said.
