The CBI did not chargesheet Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi’s wife Dayalu Ammal saying that she didn’t actively participate in the running of Kalaignar TV and that she knew only Tamil.
However, at least two witnesses have told the CBI that Dayalu was indeed part of the decision-making process.
The opposition had alleged that the CBI let off Dayalu for political reasons.
Kalaignar TV GM (finance) G Rajendran has told the CBI she was a signatory to the opening of its account with Indian Bank in Chennai. The alleged Rs200-crore bribe from Shahid Balwa’s Cineyug Films was routed to Kalaignar from this account.
Cineyug chartered accountant Mitesh Kurani has told the CBI Dayalu was one of the pledgors to the agreement executed between Dayalu, Kanimozhi, Kalaignar TV MD Sharad Kumar and Kalaignar TV in favour of Cineyug Films, which will imply that she signed papers to this effect as well.
Rajendran also said Dayalu was one of the promoters of Kalaignar TV for shares subscription and shareholders agreement between the company and Cineyug. “I state that it was executed between Cineyug Films (investor) and Kalaignar TV (company) and its three promoters Dayalu, Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar,” Rajendran said.
Vijay Aggarwal, counsel for Swan, said, “The CBI did not attach the minutes of board meetings of Kalaignar TV as evidence and it is not known how many meeting Dayalu attended and the decisions she took.”
Dayalu had told the CBI, “I am neither managing nor involving myself in the day-to-day affairs of the company.”
