India's public broadcaster Doordarshan has apologized for comments made on Malawi during the opening ceremony on DD Sports channel and underlined that these remarks about the southeast African country were "unintentional."
The commentator had described Malawi as "among the least developed countries" during the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi Oct 3.
Subsequently, Malawi's High Commissioner to India Chrissie Chawanje Mughogho protested against "derogatory comments" in a letter to DD's Director-General Aruna Sharma.
In her reply on Thursday, Sharma expressed "unconditional apology" for these remarks. "I have checked with my team and let me assure you that these comments were never made deliberately," Sharma wrote.
"I have already instructed my team and the commentator to be most careful while including information about any Commonwealth country so that we do not hurt anybody's feelings by such inadvertent comments," Sharma wrote.
