It must have taken him all the courage he had in his eight-year-old body.

Pawan Singh Rawat saw his father stab his mother, while his younger brother lay on the bed in a pool of blood. As his father turned to him next, Pawan sprang to his feet and ran for his life.

He took his bicycle and rode to Badarpur Police Station in the wee hours of Monday. The police immediately rushed to his house. The family was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where the younger brother was declared brought dead. The parents are undergoing treatment.

Police said Anand Singh Rawat (33) took the extreme step as he was under huge debt.

Rawat, who ran a provision store, attempted to kill his entire family and then slashed his wrist in a suicide bid at their one room rented house in Molar Bandh extension.

On Sunday night Rawat had dinner with his family and went to sleep.

Around 4 am, he woke up and stabbed his 6-year-old son Chetak four times with a kitchen knife. He then attacked his 32-year-old wife Nandini. When he was about to attack Pawan, the minor managed to escape.

“Pawan got on his bicycle and went to Badarpur Police Station. He narrated the incident and we rushed to the house to find Nandini and Chetak in a pool of blood. His father was lying on the floor,” said a senior police officer.

The family had been living in the area for the past four years. “He had taken money from many relatives and friends for opening the shop and later for renovating it. His business was not doing well and Rawat was depressed due to this,” said the officer.

Expressing shock, Rawat’s landlord said she was not aware that he was suffering any financial loss as he always paid the rent on time.

Rawat’s neighbour said, “I came to know about the incident when the police came. Rawat interacted with us on a daily basis. The family did not seem to have any problem.”

No suicide note has been found from Rawat.

Originally from Almora in Uttarakhand, Rawat had been working in the Capital for the past 15 years.

Police said a case of murder, attempt to murder and suicide has been registered against Rawat in Badarpur police station.

Police said Pawan is still in a state of shock and is reportedly undergoing psychiatric treatment in AIIMS Trauma Centre.
