Decision on UPA Presidential nominee soon: Karunanidhi

DMK President M Karunanidhi on Thursday said the issue of a UPA nominee for the Presidential election is a reaching a stage of fructification and a decision would be taken by this evening or tomorrow.

He told reporters after a meeting with Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, his second since he arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday night, that he was confident that a "good decision" would be arrived at involving all parties.

Though Karunanidhi appeared to concede that the Left parties were not relenting on their views on their choice of the Presidential nominee, he said the discussions were progressing on the "path of success".

Asked why incumbent President APJ Abdul Kalam could not be renominated in view of the "problems" within the UPA, he said "President's election is a big issue and we will find a consensus."

Earlier, Karunanidhi, who held discussions with Left leaders including Prakash Karat and A B Bardhan, said his party would support a Congress nominee but expressed confidence that a consensus would be evolved within the UPA.
