The national capital has become a major transit point for international drug cartels because of its proximity to Punjab, bordering Pakistan, and the international airport, official sources said.
This has become evident after heroin worth several crore of rupees have been seized from here by anti-narcotics agencies in the recent past, the sources said.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence itself has seized heroin worth over Rs 75 crore this year alone from Delhi after it increased its surveillance in north India.
The most recent haul took place on Friday when the DRI sleuths intercepted a Rajasthan Transport bus coming to the city near Tikri Border here and recovered 16.5 kg of heroin.
The contraband was being brought into the capital from Jaisalmer and was supposed to be handed over to a woman here.
Sources said heroin seized in the past few cases came from Afghanistan and Pakistan, which finds its way to Delhi through the Indo-Pak border in Punjab and Jammu regions.
The Narcotics Control Bureau too is now focusing on the national capital, as inputs have said a lot of drugs are being sent out to many European and Southeast Asian countries from the international airport or through couriers here.
The biggest seizure in the recent past was on June 2 when DRI recovered 26 kg of heroin along with $25,900 and arrested one person in connection with the incident.
