A week after the Delhi high court deferred hearing her plea for police protection, a 38-year-old widow was shot at twice in the city on Thursday, allegedly at the behest of her father-in-law who she had accused of threatening her over a property dispute.

Sharia, mother of four, was shot at in the stomach and hand while doing tailoring work outside her house in northeast Delhi's East Kamal Vihar around 4pm, police said. She was shot half an hour after returning from a Ghaziabad court where she and her two brothers were granted bail in an attempt to murder case filed by her in-laws.

"She is out of danger. She has accused her father-in-law of hiring the men who shot at her. We have detained him and he is being questioned," DCP (north east) RA Sanjeev said. An FIR was registered against 'unknown persons'.

Earlier this month, Sharia had approached the high court against her father-in-law Haji Yunus and four other male members of his family. In her petition, Sharia said her in-laws had been threatening her with dire consequences if she did not give up her claim over property, which she said, was willed to her by her late husband.

Both Sharia and her in-laws had filed counter complaints with the police after a physical altercation at one of the disputed properties in Ghaziabad on February 17.

"Please help me and take proper action against accused or else (he) will surely kidnap me and my family/ rape me/ and or even kill me," Sharia told the court in a petition, filed through her advocate Gurmeet Singh.

However, as the judge was on leave when the matter came up on March 11, the hearing was deferred to March 24.

According to Sharia's brother Akram, she was working on her sewing machine near the gate of her house on Thursday evening when he stepped inside for a moment. Hearing gunshots Akram rushed outside and saw the crumpled body of his sister. Akram said he saw Yunus and four others fleeing the scene, people close to the family told HT.

Sharia was rushed to GTB hospital. Investigating officers said her wounds were not fatal as she was shot with a country-made pistol.
