A 47-year-old man was shot dead by two unidentified bike-borne assailants near Mandoli Jail in northeast Delhi’s Harsh Vihar on Tuesday night.
The victim, identified as Om Prakash, was returning home with his wife Babita and their three-year-old daughter Bhoomi on a motorcycle after attending a relative’s wedding at Loni near Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh when the crime took place around 11.30 pm.
Police said that Babita and Bhoomi also suffered injuries after the three fell off the motorcycle when the bullet hit Prakash in the chest. The daughter suffered a fracture in her right hand. She was sitting in her mother’s lap on the bike when the incident took place. The child and her mother were discharged after medical treatment, said police.
A case of murder was registered against unknown people at the Harsh Vihar police station. Two teams were formed to probe the case. Investigators suspect it to be a murder over personal enmity. They are probing the case from other angles too.
A senior police officer said that Prakash worked at a pressure cooker manufacturing unit in Loni. He lived with his wife and five children at their rented home in Shahdara. The family earlier lived in Loni. They had shifted to the new place six months ago.
On Tuesday evening, Prakash along with his wife and daughter went to attend their relative’s wedding in Loni. Around 11 pm, they left the wedding venue on their motorcycle. As they reached near Mandoli Jail, two men on a motorcycle intercepted the bike.
“Before they could understand anything, the pillion rider whipped out a pistol and pumped a bullet in Prakash’s chest. Prakash lost balance and the three fell off the bike,” said police. The assailants then fled the spot.
Babita raised an alarm after which some passersby rushed to their help. The three were taken to Guru Teg Bhadur Hospital where Prakash was pronounced dead on arrival.
