Delhi BJP membership drive ropes in 9.34 lakh members

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Delhi unit has left no stone unturned in spreading the word about its membership drive. From campaigning in DTC buses, approaching barbers and taking help of its doctor’s cell and kirtan mandals, the BJP has managed to enrol 9.34 lakh members.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the drive on November 1.

In Uttar Pradesh, about 13 lakh members have been registered and in Maharashtra, the number has crossed 8.56 lakh.

The state unit has involved the barbers’ cell, doctors’ cell, Sikh cell and the resident welfare association cell (RWA) in its campaign and held meetings with them.

Sources in the BJP said that those aspiring for a ticket have been asked to enrol as many members as possible and this would be reviewed during ticket selection.

“This time we are not just focussing on the traditional methods. We are using innovative methods to reach out to the masses. For instance, we are approaching people in the DTC buses and are informing them about our party’s ideas and what we have achieved so far under the leadership of our prime minister,” said Ashish Sood, general secretary of the Delhi BJP.

The Mahila mandal of the state unit has been asked to visit religious congregations at temples and enrol women members.

The state unit is planning to take the campaign to another level and will target professional hubs, colleges, universities and malls to reach out to the maximum number of people. The state unit has set a target to register 28 lakh members by January since the Capital is likely to go to polls in February.

“The membership drive will serve a dual purpose of not only creating a database of members but also giving our workers an opportunity to turn those members into voters. This is why the drive will continue till March across the country. It will end on January 15 in Delhi,” said a senior BJP leader.

The party has also tied up with coffee shops and eateries frequented by youngsters to reach out to them.

Each district and morcha of the party has been given a set target to achieve for the membership drive.
