Delhiites woke up to the coldest December day in five years, as the morning temperature dipped to 3.3 degrees Celsius — five degrees below normal — on Saturday.
The outlook for Sunday — the Christmas morning — does not look too warm either, with the Met office predicting the temperature to drop to 2 degrees.
The maximum on Saturday was recorded at 20 degrees Celsius, which is two degrees below normal at this time of the season. Sunday’s maximum temperature is also expected at 20 degrees Celsius.
Fog, which kept away from the airport on Saturday, is not expected on Sunday morning too. The city may see only shallow fog in the morning.
“We are currently looking at a cover of dense fog from Sunday evening and continuing till the 28th. This fog will stay for a longer duration each day,” said RK Jenamani, director in-charge, Met department, IGI Airport.
During the past decade, the lowest minimum temperature for the month was recorded on December 12, 2005 when the mercury recorded 3.3 degrees Celsius. The all-time lowest minimum for the month is 1.1 degree Celsius recorded in 1945.
The temperatures in the city dipped suddenly last week after a spell of unusually high temperatures. On December 16, the city saw a low temperature of 4.7 degrees, which was the previous lowest for this season.
