Delhi-based designers Ashima and Leena Singh will lend their couture to the opening and closing ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games this October.

The Games Organising Committee (OC) hired the designer duo on Friday after trying out a number of designer labels for months.

The celebrated designers, who operate out of their studio in Mehrauli, have created a segment with their garments that will in fact be the first act in the opening and the closing ceremonies.

“We are not supposed to reveal the contents of the ceremonies. It's a secret,” Leena Singh told Hindustan Times on Saturday.

“But we are working with a variety of colours and material to reflect India,” Leena added.

Ashima Singh, who is the creative head of the label, has been working with the ceremonies team of the OC for the past one month.

After days of presentations, the ceremonies team contracted the Delhi-based fashion label for three segments — one for the opening and two for the closing ceremonies.

“We had to work on a number of surprise elements because the brief was that the colours and the presentation should dazzle the audience,” she said. Sources said the organisers had been trying out a number of designers, who have been presenting their ideas for the ceremonies. “A few other well-known designers asked for a lot of money for their services,” said an official.

The Ashima-Leena label has been known in the fashion world as the mark of “traditional yet global Indian” as the designers like to call it “international style with an Indian soul”.
