A 50-year-old businessman was murdered outside his home by his former neighbour in central Delhi’s Regarpura near Karol Bagh on Monday over a long-standing grudge.

The accused allegedly stabbed the victim eight times on the road and inside a local temple.

The attack was caught by a CCTV camera installed at a nearby shop. The footage showed the victim being attacked repeatedly even as three others stood silently. The deceased, Ishwar Lal, owned an embroidery factory in Karol Bagh and dealt in real estate.

Police said the accused, identified as Mahesh alias Mannu, 31, was arrested within six hours of the crime. He was caught near Liberty Cinema by a police team led by Sanjeev Gupta, ACP (operations), after his Santro crashed into a road divider while he was fleeing.

During interrogation, Mannu said he nurtured a grudge against Lal who allegedly used to bully and taunt him. Lal allegedly continued troubling Mannu even after he shifted with his family to Inderpuri in west Delhi.

In 2011, Lal beat up Mannu because he had parked his motorcycle in the lane outside his house. Mannu wanted to settle old scores, police said.

The victim’s family members said a couple of days ago, Mannu had gone to Lal’s factory across the road and threatened him with dire consequences after a spat over a property issue.

Alok Kumar, additional CP (central), said the crime took place at about 7.15 am when Lal’s employee informed him that somebody had broken the glass of his Alto car parked outside his home. When Lal was checking the damage, Mannu attacked him from behind.

“Lal was stabbed twice on his back after which he ran inside a temple in an attempt to save his life. Mannu followed him and continued to stab him.

The victim rushed towards his home but Mannu pulled him to the road and attacked him several times before fleeing in his car,” said the senior officer.

An onlooker alerted Lal’s family members and they rushed him to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

A case of murder was registered and investigators identified the accused and his car after examining the CCTV footage.
