Head Constable Ajay Kumar Tomar (37) had disguised himself by wearing a Sub-Inspector’s uniform before robbing and killing Amarjeet Singh Chadha on Saturday.
Sources said a relative of Tomar’s is a beat constable in the area; he may have given Tomar some information about Chadha.
“Chadha was fond of gold and used to wear seven-eight chains. He would take the same route everyday. It seems Tomar had done a recce before the incident,” a senior police officer said.
Tomar joined Delhi Police in 1995. A native of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, he had become Head Constable last year. Police sources said a departmental enquiry is pending against him.
“We are checking his background and previous record,” said Sudhir Yadav, JCP (northern range).
Good Samaritan pays dearly
Harender Singh, alias Sunny, 24, always wanted to help people. On Saturday night, too, he did his best to nab Ajay Kumar Tomar. Instead, he was shot at by Tomar and is critical.
“He helped a police officer chase the assailant. When they approached Tomar, he fired at Harender. Tomar then jumped off the flyover,” his friend Ajay said.
A resident of Kishan Ganj, Sarai Rohilla, Singh was taken to St Stephen’s Hospital by Ajay and another friend Vicky in an autorickshaw.
“Cops were present at the spot but they didn’t come forward to help. Harender tried to help the police but ended up being a victim himself,” added Ajay.
“The doctors say he’s very critical. We don’t even have enough money to pay for his treatment. Our hopes our fading with every passing minute,” said Gurjeet Singh, Harinder’s brother.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police said it has helped Singh’s family and is also bearing the cost of his treatment. “We have appointed an SHO and an ACP, who are in constant touch with Singh’s relatives,” said Sudhir Yadav, joint commissioner of police (northern range).
