Delhi gang-rape: defence lawyer may lose licence

The lawyer for two of the convicts sentenced to death on Friday in the December 16 gang rape and murder case has courted a controversy over alleged remarks by him maligning the victim.

The Delhi Bar Council (DBC), which took serious view of it, said it amounted to “professional misconduct” and it will cancel his practice permit if he did not apologise.

Lawyer AP Singh, who defended Vinay and Akshay had told media outside the court on Friday that , "...if my daughter was having premarital sex and moving around at night with her boyfriend, I would have burnt her alive. I would not have let this situation happen. All parents should adopt such an attitude."

DBC secretary Murari Tiwari said he received complaints from some woman lawyers and activists condemning the statement and have asked them to give them in writing.

“Even if we don't receive any complaint in writing, then the DBC would suo motu (on its own) take up the issue at its September 20 meeting. The maximum penalty which can be imposed on the lawyer is withdrawal of his practise permit”, Tiwari told HT.

The lawyers body also slammed Singh for casting aspersions on Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna soon after he sentenced the four convicts to death. Prosecution sources said this clearly amounted to contempt of court and it was for the judge to take a call on whether to initiate action against him.

“You have not upheld truth but lies. This decision has been taken under political pressure and for vote bank politics”, he had told the judge.

When contacted by HT, Singh said “I stand by all my statements made inside and outside the court. I will not apologise. Let the notices come I will file my reply”.
