Delhi gang-rape: Indictment of law, says father of victim’s friend

Supreme Court

The family of the friend of the December 16 gang rape victim on Saturday stood united in dejection with the woman’s family at the verdict.

The male friend of the victim was beaten up badly before the six accused raped the 23-year-old paramedical student.

Though he refused to comment on Saturday’s verdict, his advocate father said he was dismayed.

“This is an indictment not of the juvenile, but of the Constitution and the law of the land,” Bhanu Pratap Pandey told HT over the phone.

“Yes, I agree with her family when it comes to appealing against it in a higher court but I don’t think it will serve any purpose.”

Child rights activists said the decision requiring the “most brutal” of the rape accused to spend a little over than two years in custody was more than acceptable.

“This was expected under the Juvenile Justice Act. While we welcome the verdict, we are not in favour of increasing the quantum of punishment. Manipulating the juvenile age will not reduce the degree of the juvenile crime,” said Kavita Krishnan, secretary, All India Progressive Women’s Association.

“The next three years now have to be a corrective process. But for that the government needs to make the environment in these homes conducive to correction,” Krishnan added.
