As Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship programme of Swachh Bharat Mission clocked two years, the city’s most well-off civic body, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), launched a slew of facilities.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh opened ‘Smart Toilets’, ‘Smart Classrooms’, a ‘Jan Aushadhi Kendra’ (public dispensary) and a construction and waste (C&D) management unit.

“We have to admit the truth that in Independent India, we have never seen people become aware about any social cause before, but now people are becoming more aware about Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. It has become a social movement in India and is effectively running across the entire country,” Singh said.

Lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung, police commissioner Alok Verma and other senior NDMC officers were also present .

Later, Singh lunched with NDMC sanitation workers. While he administrated cleanliness pledge to school students at a function in Connaught Place’s Central Park, Singh said that by 2019, the Centre will achieve a target of ‘Swachh and Swasth Bharat’ set by PM Modi.

Congratulating NDMC officials, he added, “Two years ago, NDMC was on 15th rank in Swachh category in the country, but it has now achieved fourth rank. I hope that in next few months, the NDMC will achieve first rank in the category of cleanliness.”

The home minister inaugurated 14 smart toilets located in various places through a remote. Smart toilets are fitted with rooftop solar panels, Wifi provision, ATMs and water ATMs.

Smart classrooms have computers, projectors and e-learning content.

Meanwhile, Union urban development minister, Venkaiah Naidu, flagged off a ‘Swachhta Rally’ from India Gate. The NDMC stated that it will construct 65 roll call centres across New Delhi.
